There’s something about September in the Pacific Northwest that makes you realize summer is really over.
The mornings are noticeably cooler. The days are getting shorter. You grab a sweater on your way out the door, and suddenly, pumpkin spice lattes are everywhere. ☕🎃
Kids are back in school, summer vacations are winding down, and everyone seems to be settling back into a more predictable schedule.
I actually love this time of year. There’s something about getting back into a routine that feels like a fresh start.
And if you’re a business owner, September can be a great time for a fresh start with your books, too.
If your books have fallen behind, you’re not alone.
Maybe you meant to keep up with your bookkeeping, but honestly, there were more fun things to do this summer – vacations to enjoy, long evenings, and time with friends and family.
You told yourself, “I’ll catch up when things slow down.”
Sound familiar?
The good news is that you still have time.
Fall is actually a great time to get your books caught up – before the end-of-year craziness begins.
Why now?
Once October and November roll around, the calendar fills up quickly. Then come the holidays, year-end deadlines, and before you know it, January is here.
Getting your bookkeeping caught up now gives you a clear picture of where your business stands while there’s still time to make decisions and changes before the end of the year.
When your books are current, you can:
- See how your business is really doing
- Understand where your money is going
- Catch errors or transactions that need attention
- Plan for taxes
- Evaluate your cash flow
- Assess what you may want to accomplish before December 31
Most importantly, you can make decisions based on real, current information instead of guesswork.
Don’t wait until January.
January is not the time you want to discover that your bank accounts haven’t been reconciled in months or that there are transactions sitting in your books that you don’t recognize.
And tax season is definitely not the time to start trying to figure it all out.
Getting caught up now gives you breathing room. It gives you time to ask questions, fix mistakes, make adjustments, and understand what the numbers are telling you before the year is over.
A fresh start for the rest of the year
If your bookkeeping has been sitting on your “I’ll get to it” later list, this could be the perfect time to move it to the top of that list.
You don’t need to feel guilty about being behind. You just need a plan to get caught up.
Once your books are up to date, you can establish a bookkeeping routine that works for you – whether that’s keeping up with things yourself each month or having someone else take it off your plate.
Your books are one of the best tools you have to understand your business, make smart decisions, and plan for what’s ahead.
So as you settle into your fall routine, take a look at your bookkeeping.
If it’s been a while since you’ve had a clear picture of where your business stands, maybe this is your September reset.
And if the thought of catching up makes you want to reach for another pumpkin spice latte instead, I get it. 😉
That’s where I can help.
I work with small business owners to get their books caught up, cleaned up, and organized – and then keep them that way.
Let’s get your numbers in order before the end of the year, so you can head into 2027 with a clear picture of where your business stands and peace of mind.
